Horace Evans “Doc” Fader, age 92, of Natick, Massachusetts, died from chronic pulmonary disease at the Sunrise Senior Living Community of Wayland, Massachusetts, on April 16, 2013. Born February 16, 1921, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Clytie Belle (Philbrick) and Caleb Evans Fader, he received his Bachelor of Science degree from Boston University, and his Master of Education from Framingham State College. A 4-year distinguished veteran of World War II, he served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater with the 114th Engineer Battalion of the 32nd “Red Arrow” Division. After teaching mathematics at Natick High School in the 1960s, he taught chemistry, advanced placement chemistry, and advanced placement biology at Norwood High School, Norwood, Massachusetts until his retirement in 1986. A crack marksman and Life Member of the National Rifle Association, he established and served as faculty advisor to Norwood High School’s rifle team. From childhood, he was an avid sailor, and a decades-long member of the Nobscot Power Squadron, Natick, serving in various capacities including Commander, and as an instructor of navigation and advanced piloting. He also conducted training seminars in celestial navigation for the U.S. Coast Guard and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. One of his greatest joys was sailing his sloop Cat’s Paw all around New England waters and beyond. “Doc” was a great enthusiast of Dixieland and Big-Band jazz and an accomplished instrumentalist (trombone) in his own right, performing with a number of jazz ensembles over the years. He also organized and conducted the American Legion Marching Band and the Naval Brigade Band, both of Natick, Massachusetts, which over many years were regularly featured in parades in Natick and surrounding towns in the MetroWest area. He was a member of American Federation of Musicians Local 393, and for a time served as its president. He was a member of the Natick chapter of the American Legion and of Post 1274 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he served for a time as Post Commander. He was Past Master of the North Star Lodge, Ashland, Massachusetts; and was active over three decades with the Natick Commandery No. 32, Knights Templar; and Meridian Lodge, both of Natick, Massachusetts. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Mildred Felicita (Iskierski) Fader; daughter Jean Fader Drew and her husband Bruce Warren Drew of Hudson, Massachusetts; daughter Judith Ann Fader and her partner, Janet M. Pytlak of Tewskbury, Massachusetts; and son John Evans Fader of Natick, Massachusetts.
