NATICK: John Brian McGhee, age 76, of Cranston, RI, a former longtime Natick resident, died surrounded by his children on Sunday morning, September 1, 2013, after battling injuries sustained in an accident.
Born in Brockton, the son of the late James D. and Mary (Pennini) McGhee, Brian was raised and educated in Natick and served with the Army National Guard. Brian was employed for many years in the supermarket industry where he rose to V.P. at Store 24 and then ventured out on his own, establishing the Convenient Grocer in Brookline. A very energetic man with many talents, he enjoyed his later years working with his friend, Mike Kent, on a multitude of diverse projects.
Brian continued to play in men’s softball leagues and was happy to go fishing, clamming or boating when possible. He was also an avid card player and cherished time spent with family and friends. Brian loved animals. He trained a wild hawk on Cape Cod to eventually eat out of his hand and their unique relationship remains a perfect example of how Brian lived his life with patience, boldness and a lively sense of humor.
He is survived by six children, J. Michael McGhee (Geraldine Day) of Plymouth, Mary “Mimi” Myrick (Tom) of Centerville, Rich McGhee (Kim) of Paxton, Julie Prigmore (Tony) of Wickford, RI, Brian McGhee of CA, and Tammy Whidden of Sutton; three sisters, Judy Nicpon (Jack) of HI, Peggy Anderson (Andy) of CA, and Sally Nicander (Nick) of AZ; three brothers, Billy McGhee (Drena) of AZ, David McGhee (Donna) of CA, and Donald McGhee (Cheryl) of NV; 14 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Richard “Dicky” McGhee and was also pre-deceased by his ex-wife and longtime friend, Dorothy (Madden) McGhee.
There will be a graveside service on October 5th at 10:30 am at South Easton Cemetery, 473 Washington St., Easton, MA. There will also be a celebration of his life at Lillymere Farms, 2745 Tower Hill Road, North Kingstown, RI beginning at 1:00 pm. All are invited and encouraged to attend one or both remembrances. Donations may be made to your local waiter/waitress and please include a toast to Brian’s life. He would think that was “terrific”.
